Narrative Description of Project
Lagos State Water Corporation has 1, 100 km of existing pipeline. They were suffering from significant water losses as had been identified in some preliminary work by Reid Crowther. The Water Corporation retained Reid Crowther to investigate the areas where the worst losses were being experienced and initiate a program of training Water Corporation staff in the methods of repair, rehabilitation and maintenance of those areas. This was carried out over an 18 month period with a very successful result in those areas that were investigated. The long term objective of the program would be to implement an ongoing team to investigate to rehabilitate the system and ensure maintenance work is properly carried out and this particular aspect is currently under discussion with the Water Corporation.
Description of actual services provided by your staff
Reid Crowther provided four expatriates and five Nigerian members of staff to act as a team to work with Lagos State Water Corporation maintenance staff and construction crews. These crews working under the direction of the Reid Crowther team were then responsible for the repairs to the areas where problems were discovered. The system was investigated by excavating down to pipes and cutting pipes in place. Using the results from these cutting techniques a number of solutions were implemented. A typical problem was the roots intrusion into the watermains. This was a result of poor construction techniques and training was provided to the Water Corporation staff on how to improve these techniques. Other areas were investigated by means of pressurizing the system. The Water Corporation staff had not carried out pressure testing in the past and were unfamiliar with the procedures. By means of Seminars and hands-on demonstrations Reid Crowther staff were able to develop the expertise within the Water Corporation staff to carry out pressure testing of selected portions of
watermains. Missing valves were found and replaced, open pipe ends where the system had not been properly looped were found and connected. Internal surfaces of pipes were cleaned and recoated. The extensive scope of work yielded a fast payback period by the elimination of some very significant losses from the system.
